Growing crops, harvesting, transportation and selling food – all of these processes that bring food to our table consume energy and resources. If we waste less food, we conserve resources and energy that could otherwise be used in other ways.
If you run a business, a hotel, a restaurant or a kitchen, we know we are preaching to the choir when we say that reducing food waste will reduce costs. It’s obvious, and we know you know. If we know what we can buy less of, if we know what ingredients are being over-trimmed, if we know how much frozen food we bring out of the freezer just to put in the bin, then we would be much better off. So what would reducing up to 8% of your food cost mean for your business today?
If we halve our food waste by 2050, we will avoid 26.2 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide. And that is equivalent to taking 4.3 billion cars off the road.
